Lesedi FM strengthens community connection with AEQ technology

With over six decades on air, Lesedi FM remains one of South Africa’s most influential radio stations. Part of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), this public radio station first aired in 1960 and now reaches seven provinces directly via FM frequencies ranging from 87.7 to 106.6, with extended coverage in the remaining two.

Broadcasting primarily to Sesotho-speaking and understanding communities, Lesedi FM holds the distinction of being the largest Sesotho-language station in the country, and the fourth largest overall, reaching an impressive audience of 3.46 million listeners.

Staying true to its public service mandate, Lesedi FM has taken a bold step to get even closer to its listeners by launching a mobile radio unit. This innovative move aims to bring the studio directly to the community, especially its urban and metropolitan audience, whose core demographic falls between the ages of 25 and 49.

At the heart of this mobile broadcasting setup is the AEQ CAPITOL IP digital audio console, an essential piece of equipment designed to meet the demands of modern, on-the-go radio production.

The AEQ CAPITOL IP is a fixed-configuration digital audio mixing console available in 8- or 12- fader versions. Its IP connectivity is built into the core through a 16-input/16-output module, offering a broad range of connectivity options: 4 mic/line inputs, 12 analog inputs, 4 AES/EBU digital stereo inputs, 2 USB stereo digital inputs, optional dual phone lines, and support for multichannel digital audio links, either 16 AoIP channels over dual Ethernet or up to 64 MADI channels via fiber optic input.

Widely adopted by broadcasters around the world, the CAPITOL IP is praised for combining cutting-edge digital and IP-based functionality with exceptional ease of use and rugged reliability. For Lesedi FM, its deployment marks a strategic investment in making radio more mobile, interactive, and community-focused, while staying at the forefront of public broadcasting technology.
